The Craig Thomson Quartet

November 20

The Craig Thomson Quartet features Neville Bowman on piano, Bernie Addington on bass, Michael Treadway on drums, and Craig on saxophones.

This concert is from our Classic Album Concert series, which we ran for over a year before COVID hit. Soul Station: the Music of Hank Mobley was the first show in the series, and it remains one of my favourite albums of all time. We play the arrangements very true to the original source album, but with our own solos and maybe a few little twists that show our personalities as musicians. This album swings like crazy, and so will the show! We’ll also play a few selections from other parts of Hank Mobley’s esteemed career. I’m not alone in thinking that this is among the greatest jazz albums of all time, especially for lovers of the saxophone!
For those unfamiliar with Hank Mobley, he was a hard bop master. Sometimes called the Middleweight Champion of the Tenor Saxophone, he had a clear sound and an exceptional grasp of melodic improvisation. He played the middle ground between the fiery approaches of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane and the cooler stylings of players like Stan Getz. Drummers loved playing with Mobley, as his excellent time propelled the groove forward effortlessly. He spent time in the bands of Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, and other jazz luminaries, and released dozens of albums under his own name. He is truly an underappreciated Jazz legend!
