Michael Occhipinti & Friends

May 4, 2024

The Music of Joni Mitchell and John Lennon

Michael Occhipinti is no stranger to the Vernon Jazz Club, and one of the few projects he hasn’t presented in Vernon is the music from his celebrated album Shine On: The Universe of John Lennon.  Featuring Yvette Tollar (as well as other album guests Laila Biali, Elizabeth Shepherd, and Denzel Sinclair), Michael takes music from both the Beatles and John Lennon’s solo career, and put his own imaginative stamp on it.

Versatile, veteran vocalist Yvette Tollar has performed extensively across Canada and around the world. With her unmistakable, velvety tone and keen musical instincts Yvette delivers lyrics with maturity and soul. Her album, Ima, was nominated for a JUNO Award (Best Vocal Album).  Her new album, due in late spring 2024,  dives deep into the illustrious Joni Mitchell songbook, exploring the breadth of Joni’s work from the perspective of one of Canada’s most honest and gifted jazz vocalists.
Together these long-time musical friends present the work of two of the 20th Century’s most brilliant songwriters in unforgettable and creative ways.
Joining Michael and Yvette will be an incredible west Kootenay rhythm section: David Restivo on piano, Jill McKenna on bass, and Tony Ferraro on drums.
