Mike Rud Trio

The Mike Rud Trio is a celebration of some of the finest musicians living right next door in Nelson, BC!

Mike Rud is a Juno award-winning jazz guitarist and songwriter. He is also a music instructor at Selkirk College in Nelson, BC. As an instrumentalist, Mike has played alongside some of the greatest jazz musicians of the era like Peter Bernstein, Kenny Wheeler, Herb Ellis and Joey DeFrancesco. As a songwriter and arranger, Mike won the 2014 Juno Award for his album Notes on Montreal, a critically acclaimed musical portrait of the city. Mike’s subsequent 2015 solo release, Miniatures, delighted audiences across Canada, creating the effect of a small group with only his voice and his guitar. He has a master’s degree from McGill, and studied privately in New York City with one of the fathers of modern jazz guitar, Jim Hall.

Originally from Ottawa, Rob has been performing professionally since he was 16 years old. He has degrees from McGill University in Montreal and the University of Colorado in Boulder. During his career, he has performed at prestigious jazz clubs and premiere concert halls throughout the world including The Blue Note and Carnegie Hall. In 2013.

Doug Stephenson is no stranger to the VJC. He is in demand to play bass with some of our most entertaining acts from the last several years. Doug  has been at the heart of Western Canada’s jazz community for more than 30 years. Born in Calgary, he has performed with a wide range of artists including Charlie Rouse, Bob Murphy, Les McCann, Jay Thomas, John Stowell, Tommy Banks, P.J. Perry, Altered Laws, Barry Romberg, Bob Brough, Campbell Ryga and of course, Melody Diachun
